A brief history of the area
Founded in 1855 by the Voortrekker leader Marthinus Pretorius, Pretoria was named after his father Andries Pretorius. He chose a spot on the banks of the "Apies river" (Afrikaans for "Monkeys river") as the new capital of the South African Republic.
The elder Pretorius was a hero to the Voortrekkers after his victory over the Zulus in the Battle of Blood River. He was also a key negotiator with the Sand River Convention in 1852, in which Britain acknowledged the independence of the Transvaal. Pretoria became the capital in 1860.
Today, Pretoria is known as the City of Tshwane.
