Potchefstroom property: A profile of Potchefstroom property from a buyer’s perspective, with information on facilities and attractions.

Potchefstroom Property

Located on the banks of the Mooi River in the North West Province, Potchefstroom is one of South Africa’s foremost academic towns. Potchefstroom is home to a university, technical college and agricultural college, along with two of the country’s oldest and most prestigious government schools.

Once a sleepy rural village, Potchefstroom has grown rapidly in recent decades. It now boasts a well-developed commercial sector. The town still offers residents a high quality of life, with one of the lowest urban crime rates in South Africa, and excellent air quality thanks to the absence of large scale factories and manufacturing enterprises.

There are a wide range of property opportunities available in Potchefstroom, from the older freestanding houses and apartment complexes of central town, to the upmarket residential clusters that have been developed on the town’s perimeter in recent years.

Houses in Potchefstroom offer a good balance between pricing and investment potential. Median house prices have been rising steadily over the past decade, yet spacious three bedroom houses remain within reach of young families. Apartment prices have seen less growth, but provide a very affordable entry point into the property market for first-time buyers.

Potchefstroom Attractions

Residents of Potchefstroom enjoy access to several interesting natural and historic attractions. These include:

  • The Dome Bergland Nature Park, located on an 80km meteor impact site. This park offers a host of activities, ranging from hiking and climbing to river rafting and fly-fishing

  • Dozens of museums and heritage sites are in and around the town, including the Potchefstroom Museum, the President Pretorius Museum, South African National Artillery Memorial and the Old Fort and Cemetery.
  • One of the most scenic heritage sites in Potchefstroom is Oak Avenue. This is South Africa’s longest oak lined avenue, stretching 6.84 kilometres between the Agricultural Centre and the Lakeside Resort.

Potchefstroom Facilities

Potchefstroom is home to a small selection of medical facilities, including the private Potchefstroom Mediclinic, the state-run Potchefstroom Hospital and the Mooimed Operating Company. The town also offers some of the finest educational facilities of any small town in South Africa. A wide selection of schools catering to all age ranges can be found in the town, including Potchefstroom High School for Boys and Potchefstroom High School for Girls.

Potchefstroom residents can shop ‘til they drop at the Mooi River Mall. This large, modern mall offers almost 50,000m2 of retail space, a Ster Kinekor cinema complex and 2000 parking bays. In addition, several smaller strip malls and street retail outlets are located throughout Potchefstroom.
