The Thesen Islands are a series of 19 man-made islets positioned in the Knysna Estuary. The islands were built to facilitate the development of a luxury gated community, providing residents with a safe, carefree lifestyle while also putting them within walking distance of the resort town of Knysna.
The Thesen Islands are spread over an area of 90 hectares, with the various islets linked by bridges. A causeway and bridge connects the island with the Knysna Mainland. While the islands do not offer residents access to essential services, a wide variety of these are available on the Knysna mainland. These include numerous schools, a post office and a police station, as well as both private and public hospitals.
